How to Share a Parking Departure Safely in NYC

A driver is leaving. Another nearby driver is looking. Sharing a timely departure can give the next person a useful place to start—but it cannot promise that a public curb space will still be open when they arrive.

In a busy New York neighborhood, the most helpful parking handoff is simple: share accurate information when it is safe, coordinate without blocking the street, and check the actual curb before parking.

If you are leaving a street spot

  1. Share only a real departure. Post when you are preparing to leave the space, not to reserve it for someone else.
  2. Wait until it is safe to use your phone. Pull over legally or finish the trip before updating an app. Never stop in a travel lane or put another person in the roadway.
  3. Be clear and considerate. Share the location you are leaving, then depart when ready. You are not selling the space and do not have to hold it.

If you are looking for a space

  1. Treat a report as a lead, not a reservation. Street conditions change and another driver may arrive first.
  2. Keep moving safely. Do not double-park, obstruct traffic, or ask someone to stand in a public space to save it.
  3. Check the block yourself. Read the posted signs, curb markings, meter information, and any temporary restrictions before leaving your vehicle.

Street-cleaning schedules are a separate question

An alternate-side parking suspension concerns scheduled street cleaning; it does not automatically remove meter rules or every other parking restriction. Check the current NYC311 alternate-side parking guidance and follow the signs posted on the block. ParkSwap’s NYC parking guide links to official sources and clearly explains what its calendar can—and cannot—tell you.

What a community report can—and cannot—do

A report can help drivers coordinate around a possible opening. It cannot establish ownership, guarantee availability, reserve a public street space, or override parking regulations. Optional thank-yous are not payment for a space, and no one is required to tip.

That distinction matters: useful information should help you make a better decision without creating a false promise. Always use your judgment at the curb and verify current rules for yourself.
